What does SEO mean to you?

September 18th, 2009

So you have a website and you want to do some promotion, You know somehow people can increase their position or rank in search engines like Google, or Bing. OK, pretty much simple, you start reading articles on web.. ah little tiresome.. postponed for the weekend.. got busy.. hired a consultant.. ok an offshore consultant for cheap prices.. Did you ask for the plan? probably not, Ok better to ask so you know what they are going to do and something they do should be legitimate, you don’t want to be one of the spammers, do you?

OK, now the main thing.. you found a good consultant he did SEO and you see that your page is ranked above in search engines, and indeed the increase in traffic as well. but think again, is this what you want? I think yes,, really? People tend to spend less than a second in your website and go away.. this is definitely not what you wanted.. you want the visitors that are probably interested in your product or service.. not those who are interested in something else. Apart from that today search engine results are so worse that people just try to avoid any websites that doesn’t have human title and description. I explain this…

To increase search engine ranking, your SEO consultant will use the keywords very often, e.g. if you are a lawyer, he will use it like this, lawyer, lawyer in New York, a best lawyer in town, a lawyer you can trust, lawyer for all types of cases, divorce lawyer, criminal lawyer.. and so on. Trust me this is a standard practice.

Ok so i want a divorce lawyer in New York.. i goggled for “divorce lawyer in New York”, and you ranked the first… do you think i will click the link? may be? ok yes, may be i do, may be i don’t. But five years back when some site ranked number one for my search i always clicked it.. and 99% chances was that it was the site i was looking for…. so what went wrong?? To many websites? or too many SEO? too many SEO !

In my case if i see the description like “lawyer, lawyer in New York, a best lawyer in town, a lawyer you can trust, lawyer for all types of cases, divorce lawyer, criminal lawyer..  “ and ranked number one in Google.. i will never click that link, even if i do.. i will look for the word “divorce lawyer” in heading of the content and if i don’t find i will close the window and look for the other site..result… you have the traffic but no client..

So, In order to get a client be specific, you don’t need to have the description that doesn’t make a sense to human but only to search engines. You don’t need the large content that makes sense only for search engines and not to human.. remember human likes short texts and images, search engine likes long text and less images. so just for the sake of the search engines don’t loose your client.

If you make the websites good for human, believe me the search engines will need to rank it higher, if they don’t do it currently they will be forced to modify their algorithm, and when there is such a big fight between Google,  Bing and Yahoo to show good results.. everyone is willing to modify their algorithms to show the nice fine results that people like me want to see. Just one thing to remember don’t build site only for search engines build it for human.

In the next blog i will discuss the strategies that are more human friendly, and of course good for search engines as well after all we know traffic come from there, but may not the clients.. so we will get the traffic from the search engines and the clients from the “humane strategy for search engine optimization
